Open public data is publicly available information that is also findable, accessible, machine-readable, and sharable. Liberated from proprietary and read-only formats, open public data allows citizens to understand their government better, make more informed decisions, build useful public services, and even realize entrepreneurial opportunities

Ryan McGreal is the editor of Raise the Hammer, a Hamilton based web magazine focused on urban issues. He lives in Hamilton with his family and works as a programmer, writer and consultant.
Ryan volunteers with Hamilton Light Rail, a citizen group dedicated to bringing light rail transit to Hamilton. Several of his essays have been published in the Hamilton Spectator, and he occasionally blogs for OpenFile Hamilton.
