SUMMARY:Hacking Health: Managing Diabetes & Printing Body Parts
DESCRIPTION:We have two awesome presentations this meetup: \n1 Managing Diabetes–Prof. Joanna Wilson \nJoanna Wilson is an Associate Professor of Biology at McMaster University and the mother of a Type 1 diabetic child. Her daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) over a year ago and currently manages her insulin therapy with multiple daily injections and monitors her blood sugar with a continuous glucose monitoring device. Joanna will discuss the basics of care for a person with T1D and the major challenges that families face in delivering that care inside and outside of the home\, including school. She will describe the options for insulin delivery and blood sugar monitoring essential for T1D and where technology has helped her family cope with the high demands of this disease. Lastly\, she will discuss some of the needs of the T1D community such as a glucagon delivery device that can be adopted by schools. \n2 Printing Body Parts–Mohawk 3D Printing Group \nThe Mohawk 3D Printing Group is a student group focused on applied research in the area of additive manufacturing. Jeffrey McIsaac\, general manager of the Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre\, suggested its formation in early 2017 to provide research opportunities for Mohawk students through access to AMIC resources and expertise. \nMedical Phantom Project: Our student-led project aims to design a new type of 3D printer capable of producing viable medical phantoms\, artificial body parts that can be used for medical purposes such as rehearsing surgeries or calibrating imaging instruments. AMIC lab technician Allan Michaud recommended the idea to the 3D Printing Group as a project that would be challenging but possible. Our aim is to produce a multi-extrusion printer that can print three distinct materials: synthetic bone\, flesh\, and organ material. \nCheck Hacking Health Hamilton Newsletter (http://hhhamilton.ca/newsletter/)

SUMMARY:Electronics Meetup: Projects\, Swap Shop & Nerdy Chatter
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be downstairs at the back \nDue to the success of the last pub style meetup I thought we’d run another one like this so bring any hardware projects you’ve been working on to show people and give people a demo. \nAlso I think we all loved the swapping electronics so – bring any modules\,  gadgets\, dev boards you own that you want to swap/give away and let them get some use. I bet everyone has a draw with a tonne of parts in it that once had a project but now are in ruins? That’s the kind of thing to bring\, hopefully you can swap it for something you might find more useful. \nOn another note we have got some sponsorship from Mouser Electronics and PCB Way confirmed for our soldering challenge – Im going to organise this for the January meetup so watch this space. \nAs ever if anyone knows of anyone that might want to present\, any company that might want to get involved or anyone that would be interested in electronics hardware then let them know about us 🙂 \nLook forward to seeing you there! \nMarc

SUMMARY:Girls Learning Code: Animating & Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:From Saturday morning cartoons to blockbuster films\, animating has the power to inspire\, educate\, and entertain. \nTraditionally\, animation involves drawing several pictures\, sometimes thousands\, then playing them in sequence to create the illusion of movement. Today\, we have digital tools that help us create animations more easily by letting us control characters\, backgrounds\, and even sounds with code. \nThis experience offers learners the opportunity to express their creativity in a super fun environment\, and learn about the different elements of a story\, as well as basic design principles. Using Scratch\, a beginner level programming environment\, learners will create interactive stories through animation. They will also be introduced to Scratch’s amazing online community\, where they will have the opportunity to upload their projects for others to enjoy! \nEach Animating & Storytelling with Scratch workshop has the same flow\, but different activities. Come and create a new animation every time!

SUMMARY:Level Up
DESCRIPTION:YWCA Hamilton is pleased to present Level Up\, a speaker event focusing on advancing women’s skills\, diversity\, and leadership in the workplace. This breakfast event offers attendants the opportunity to learn about barriers women face in the workplace\, while at the same time exploring tools and tactics that will be useful to overcoming obstacles. \n  \nAgenda: \n7:15 am – Registration Opens \n7:15-8:00 am – Breakfast Buffet \n8:00-8:30 am – McMaster University Presents the EXCLerator Project Results Summary: Women & Diversity in Executive and Community Leadership \n8:30-9:30 am – Keynote Speaker: Heather Payne Presents Digital Literacy: Why We Need to Know How to Make Tech \n  \nMcMaster University Presents the EXCLerator Project Results Summary \nWomen & Diversity in Executive and Community Leadership \nThis 2017 report is the second installment of the Women & Diversity EXCLerator Project\, the first comprehensive investigation into diverse leadership representation in Hamilton and Halton. This report analyzes findings against our initial 2014 benchmark data\, allowing us to evaluate progress and identify setbacks in women’s leadership trajectories across nine employment sectors. \nThe 2017 EXCLerator project expands the scope in two key ways. First\, this edition quantifies the racial diversity of Hamilton and Halton’s top leadership. Second\, it adds a ‘youth sector’ to gain insight into the diversity of the regions’ youngest leaders. These additions are critical to understanding the differing experiences of ‘diverse’ leaders beyond the gender facet\, as well as state of the leadership pipeline and activism in the struggle for gender and racial equity. \n  \nKeynote Speaker: Heather Payne\, Founder of Ladies Learning Code and CEO of HackerYou \nTECHNOLOGY – Digital Literacy: Why We Need to Know How to Make Tech \nIn this keynote\, Heather Payne focuses on technology education\, entrepreneurship\, and women in tech. She addresses major issues such as why children aren’t learning about technology from making and maker perspectives at school\, and why women are still underrepresented in the tech industry. She draws on her experience with Ladies Learning Code to give real-life examples of teaching methods that inspire students and provide innovative\, hands-on learning. She tells young people and recent graduates how learning how to code can make you a more valuable and desirable employee. And\, she gives us insight into how we can work to create technology that will serve us individually\, as well as the much broader population. With grace\, optimism\, and experience seemingly beyond her years\, Payne not only changes the way we view our relationship to technology and the web\, but she inspires us to see what each of us is truly capable of.
