SUMMARY:Mohawk SURGE: Tech Startup Bootcamp Session #3
DESCRIPTION:This is a three part series targeted specifically to final year Mohawk College Engineering Technology students\, presented by SURGE Mohawk’s Entrepreneurship Connection. \nThis registration is for Session #3 – Sales and Marketing (Facilitated by: Brad Elder) \nWith market validation behind you and a viable product ready to hatch\, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll market and commercialize your innovation. In this workshop\, we’ll talk about the cornerstones of any marketing strategy\, including customer segmentation\, targeting and positioning. And then we’ll explore the different sales and marketing levers tech entrepreneurs can pull to build customer awareness and product adoption. \nStart-up tech ventures often go to market on a shoe-string budget\, which puts a premium on “high return” sales and marketing investments. We’ll discuss a variety of online and offline options that can comprise your “marketing mix”\, including Personal Selling\, Public Relations and Content Marketing\, and how to get the most out of your precious marketing budget! \nFacilitator Brad Elder is a Marketing Professor at Mohawk College who has held marketing and business development roles with start-ups in the technology and retail sectors. He helped enterprise software maker Workbrain grow into a market leader from its early days through its IPO on the TSX and beyond.

SUMMARY:Wikipedia Edit-A-thon by Ladies Learning Code Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:What is Ladies Learning Code?\nWe’re a Canada wide not-for-profit organization providing women\, *men and youth the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly technical skills in a social and collaborative way. We’re all about showing people that learning to code can be fun! \n*MEN ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND (AND THEY DO!)\, BUT WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO BRING AN ADDITIONAL FEMALE LEARNER WHERE POSSIBLE\nWhat is a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon?\nLong gone are the days of Encyclopedia Britannica on the shelves of homes or trips to the library to complete a book report. Generations young and old are turning to the internet and resources like Wikipedia to discover important information about the world around them. The benefits are endless – technology has increased access and ease while minimizing many barriers that previously existed. Information now transcends rooms and borders turning anyone into an author or historian. But\, women still remain underrepresented. \nWikipedia has a gender bias problem. Their own surveys have indicated that only about 8–16 percent of Wikipedia editors are female and a 2009 Wikimedia Foundation survey showed only six percent of super editors (more than 500 edits) were female. This is an issue for many reasons\, including reports of harassment of female editors on Wikipedia forums. \n\nThe lack of female editors on Wikipedia also creates a bias in the content generated by their editor community. We need more women participating to ensure that women are represented equally in the massive fabric of human history that is Wikipedia. One approach to address this bias is running female edit-a-thons\, which are growing in popularity and have taken place across the globe. \nWe are proud to be hosting a feminist edit-a-thon in partnership with Art + Feminism (http://www.artandfeminism.org/) to bring together our incredible community of women in Hamilton and bring some much-needed new knowledge to Wikipedia! \nNo experience necessary with editing or wikipedia but\, you will need to bring a laptop (or let us know if you’ll need access to an extra one – we can facilitate that too!). All feminists welcome – men included! \nThe event is free but please register to indicate that you plan to attend. Organizers will email all registrants with important ahead-of-time preparation (just a few easy steps!) that you need in order to start editing right away at the event. \nThis facility is accessible by elevator. \nQuestions?\nEmail us at info [at] ladieslearningcode.com

SUMMARY:Tech Lessons for Non-Tech Entrepreneurs - IF Lunch 'n Learn
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, January 24\, 2017 for a Lunch ‘n Learn on Tech Lessons for Non-technical Entrepreneurspresented by our own Executive Director here at Innovation Factory\, David Carter! \nTechnology is now so accessible that it’s easy to come up with an idea for an innovation and simply hire developers to execute your vision. As a result\, non-tech founders are starting tech companies more than ever\, and within corporations\, department managers are upping their tech game by launching apps and cloud software to offer to their customers. \nOf course you can recruit a technical co-founder\, you can outsource\, and you can hire a staff of developers. The problem arises in how you communicate that vision to them. \nIn this session\, David will talk about how to document your product in a way that removes ambiguity for your tech team and sets the proper milestones and testing procedures. With that\, both sides can agree on what needs to be accomplished and when a feature is deemed “done”. He’ll discuss how to iterate on your application design before you pay to have a single line of code written\, and about how to mock up your vision and gain the support of your future customers and even pre-sell your product.\n \n\n\n\nAgenda \n11:30am-noon – Lunch & Networking\nNoon-1pm – Factory 5 (TBA) and Keynote Presentation (David Carter)\n1pm – 2pm – Dessert & Networking (at iF’s Innovation Destination) \nAbout David Carter \nDavid Carter is the Executive Director of the Innovation Factory (iF). iF is Hamilton’s Regional Innovation Centre with the mandate to be a catalyst for innovation in Hamilton. Appropriately\, David’s career has been working in innovation since he joined the workforce. It started as a consultant in the burgeoning personal computer industry and then as an International Markets Analyst Toronto Stock Exchange in the late 80’s. At Microsoft he worked through the revolution in desktop computing and the internet in the 90s. In 2001\, after 11 years at Microsoft he decided to start his own company. From 2001 until 2012 he and his partner took their start-up from a small office in Burlington\, to a Boston based firm raising $20 million in venture capital. Carter is thrilled to support today’s entrepreneurs in Hamilton and to be a part of the larger Hamilton ecosystem. \n\n*Note: We have introduced a nominal attendance fee to allow us to better predict numbers and cover a portion of our catering costs.

SUMMARY:eHealth is a team sport - Hacking Health meetup
DESCRIPTION:This month\, McMaster’s Master of Science in eHealth program is hosting us at the new McMaster Centre for Continuing Education\, right at the corner of King and James. You may have noticed this ultra-modern upgrade to the existing building as you passed by. Now we have a chance to get inside and enjoy their hospitality. \nWhat are they up to at Mac eHealth? You may also have heard about the Mac eHealth program. It’s a unique three-way joint venture of the business school and the faculties of health science and engineering\, aiming to bring Master students up to speed on health\, information and management sciences. The interdisciplinary program brings together programmers\, front-line staff\, admin\, and clinicians. \nWe have two awesome groups presenting this month! \n \nMyHealth PHRI: Dr. Cynthia Lokker from eHealth and Dr. Itzhak Gabizon from PHRI are developing a research app to evaluate the effectiveness of mobile health apps. They are drawing on rigorous research methods to evaluate which health apps actually work — something that is desperately needed in a field with hundreds of thousands of poorly vetted apps out there. \n \nVirtual Ward: Dr. Richard Sztramko will present the virtual ward he’s developed to facilitate communication among clinicians during patient handovers within a hospital ward. \nFinally: \nInterested in collaborating with Mac researchers and students? Learn how you can take advantage of opportunities to work with the Mac eHealth program and others!
