A UX designer\, developer and certified usability analyst for over 14 years\, she has helped several organizations in Canada as well as government agencies in the UK\, EU and the Nordics to create their roadmap for accessibility through a process of adopting\, implementing\, and delivering inclusive design practices into their operations and culture. She is a regular volunteer at #a11yTO and invited expert at the W3C. \nModerator:\nEvelyn Ferguson Elliot is a Certified Professional of Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC). She is a long-time accessibility advocate. Evelyn graduated last year from Mohawk College’s Accessible Media Production program. Soon\, she will be joining the Federal Government of Canada as a Digital Accessibility Specialist. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://mohawkcollege.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJArf-mupzgrGtfViczHkZXZk2NBwuE7EixJ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:The New Developers : s03e02: Introduction to Rust (feat. Jenifer Champagne)
DESCRIPTION:Join The New Developers for an introduction to the Rust programming language\, delivered by our returning guest Jenifer Champagne of Weever Apps. She’ll be covering the basics of Rust with a coding tutorial\, followed by a live online Q&A session.\nYou can watch the event live on our Twitch channel and ask your questions in the chat! \nJenifer has worked in the industry for many years and is heavily involved in the Hamilton developer community. Take advantage of this opportunity to ask her questions you may have about the Rust language or anything at all about software development. \n“But I don’t know anything about Rust!”\nDid we mention it’s just an introduction? Jenifer’s talk has been designed to introduce Rust from the ground up. She is an extraordinary teacher. \n“But the Rust language isn’t even part of the Mohawk software program. Do I need it?”\nIt’s true that you don’t need to know Rust for your courses at Mohawk. But on top of just being interesting\, learning any new programming language will help reinforce your understanding of the programming fundamentals that all languages share. Also\, Jenifer is a very accomplished programmer\, so no matter what language she’s teaching us\, we’re going to learn more than just the language itself. \n“But I don’t really know anything about programming yet!” Then you really should come. Our events aim to inspire new developers to learn and enhance the skills needed to succeed in the field. Attending an event like this just might motivate you to dive deeper into programming and learn about more languages. But don’t worry – nobody will ask you to code anything at the event! Ask Jenifer some questions only if you want to. Otherwise\, just enjoy the tutorial! \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Hamilton Ontario WordPress Meetup : Keep The Host(ing) Alive!
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we’re talking hosting! We’ve invited people from all over to tell us about their hosting and have our members ask questions of them. \nSome of the questions we might ask:\n1. What is hosting?\n2. What is shared hosting?\n3. What is managed hosting?\n4. What is the difference?\n5. What considerations should I be making in picking a host?\n6. Which type of hosting is right for me?\n7. Should I do it myself or have someone do it for me? \nIf you have questions\, please post them here. \nWe’ll post our guest speakers soon. Let us know if you’d like to be one of our speakers\, either for this session or future meetups! \nOur Speakers (so far): \nAndy McIlwain leads community programs for GoDaddy Pro and Resellers. Prior to joining GoDaddy\, Andy hopped between in-house\, agency and freelance web developer roles. On the side\, he’s organized local WordPress meetups for 10+ years. You can find him on Twitter\, @andymci. \nAl Davis (@adavis3105) is a veteran of the web hosting business\, having spent over 20 years in the industry. Over that period\, he had held many roles for various companies starting out as tech support and moving his way up to Product Manager for national telcos and international white label hosting providers. Al’s also a WordPress veteran\, who started using WordPress very early on in its existence. He’s helped organize local WordCamps\, in addition to speaking at WordCamps in both in Canada and the US. Currently\, he’s part of the Kinsta managed WordPress hosting team.

SUMMARY:#a11yHAM - Digital Accessibility & the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, September 3\, 2020\, at 7:00 pm Eastern Time (US and Canada)\, for a conversation with Julie Dring\, Executive Director of Hamilton Artists Inc. and Shelley Falconer\, President and CEO of the Art Gallery of Hamilton. The event will be moderated by Christina Babcock. \nThey will share information about how their galleries support digital accessibility and inclusive design\, the programs that they offer\, and their efforts to ensure that the collections can be enjoyed by everyone. \nHamilton Artists Inc. (The Inc.)\, is a non-profit artist-run centre that’s been operating in Hamilton for 45 years. The Inc. aims to be an inclusive\, all-welcoming\, and free space for contemporary visual artists to explore\, experiment\, take-risks\, exhibit and develop their artistic practice. The Inc. is aware of how institutional barriers have historically prevented marginalized persons\, such as people with disabilities\, from accessing artistic spaces. The staff and Board are dedicated to breaking down these barriers to create a more equitable and accessible environment. \nThe Art Gallery of Hamilton recognizes the diversity of people’s abilities and needs. They strive to make their collections\, exhibitions\, programs\, and services accessible to all. They are committed to working in partnership with staff\, volunteers\, and the community to identify\, prevent\, and remove barriers to participation. \nOur event will be moderated by Christina Babcock. Christina is a 2019 graduate of the Accessible Media Production program and now writes scripts for described video. As a member of Surprise!Hamilton\, she has done installations on the Lower Escarpment Rail Trail\, at Carter Park\, and on the Pipeline Trail. All three of these locations are accessible\, and she tries to remember to include the active Accessible Icon on promotional material.
