SUMMARY:HTML & CSS for Beginners by Ladies Learning Code
DESCRIPTION:What is Ladies Learning Code?\n \nWe’re a Canada wide not-for-profit organization providing women\, *men and youth the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly technical skills in a social and collaborative way. We’re all about showing people that learning to code can be fun! \n*Men are welcome to attend (and they do!)\, but we encourage you to bring an additional female learner where possible \n  \nWhy HTML & CSS?\n \nIf you are looking to get your feet wet when it comes to programming\, then this is the workshop for you. HTML and CSS are the backbone of all websites\, and knowledge of them is a necessity if you are interested in things like web development\, creating marketing emails\, or even blogging! The web without HTML and CSS would be would be a world without colourful\, pretty websites\, not to mention the web applications we all use daily. It’s easy to learn\, and was designed so that everyone – even non-programmers – can do it. No fancy programs are needed\, just Notepad and a web browser! \nThe Ladies Learning Code Introduction to HTML & CSS workshop is designed to be a hands-on experience. \nDuring the session\, you’ll build something like this and learn the following:\n– Basic techniques and concepts that are translatable to other programming languages\n– The building blocks of how HTML and CSS work together to create richer online experiences\n– How to create a rich website with images\, video\, and a CSS-defined layout\n– How to create a beautiful multi-page website\n– What resources are available if you’d like to continue learning at home (and we think you will) \n  \nIs this workshop for you?\n \nThis workshop has been designed for absolute beginners. If you know absolutely nothing about coding or computer programming\, you’ve come to the right place! Our only expectation is that you know how to open up a web browser and do something online like checking your email. (But if you’re reading this\, we’re pretty sure you know how to do that.) \n

Girls will also be introduced to Scratch’s amazing online community sloganed: “Imagine\, Program\, Share\,” where they will have the opportunity to upload their game for anyone on the web to download and play. \nAt the end of the workshop\, each girl will also get a chance to practice their presentation skills and showcase their creation for everyone attending the workshop to experience and enjoy! \nWhat is Girls Learning Code? \nFounded by the same women who introduced Ladies Learning Code in 2011\, Girls Learning Code is less about “code” and more about changing the world – through teamwork\, creativity\, and\, of course\, technology. \nWhat Makes Girls Learning Code Different? \nGirls Learning Code has been designed specifically with girls in mind\, by the team who founded Ladies Learning Code. When developing plans and curriculum for workshops\, we keep in mind a recurrent theme in research on gender and technology: girls approach the computer as a “tool” useful primarily for what it can do; boys more often view the computer as a “toy” or an extension of the self. Thus\, the theme of workshops are “Changing the World” and how technology can be used as the means\, not the end. \nCheck out this video of one of our Girls Learning Code camps in Toronto. \nWhat parents say about Girls Learning Code: \n“My daughter went to the camp without a clear understanding of what a tech camp for girls was but was pleasantly surprised by the experience. She enjoyed every single day at the camp and showed great enthusiasm about the topic she and her group chose to present. I would not hesitate to send her to another tech camp with LLC whenever the opportunity arises.” \n“My daughter wasn’t sold on the idea of attending a “technology camp” for March Break. By the second day she was raving about how much fun she was having AND how much she was learning. What a great combination!” \n“I learned about Girls Learning Code from the Toronto Star. I looked into it and I thought it was such a great opportunity for my daughter to be exposed in the field of technology. I was really happy that she went to Girls Learning Code because she was introduced to different programming languages\, exposed to companies like Google and Mozilla and had to work with different girls she’s never met before. I wish my older daughter who is now in first year university had the same opportunity as her sister.” \n“This was a great iniative that is needed to encourage females to become leaders in computer technology field. It was inspiring for my daughter to visit Google\, to see a modern office space\, to see a bilingual women in a leading position at Google. This camp provided a perspective to girls that they not only can play and use technology\, they can design\, create and become leaders in technology.” \n“My daughter had a blast\, the other campers were a great bunch of girls\, they learned\, grew and had fun. The venue was well chosen\, the balance of activities was good. The extra little touches of caring were noticable and appreciated. The camp was down to earth and unpretentious but the counsellors took their jobs seriously. A+. I will recommend to other parents.”

There are many factors to consider from audio\, visuals\, technology\, game play\, and story. This talk will examine each one of these areas and determine which of them is the most important. This talk will also attempt to forward a universal theory for game design that transcends technology\, platforms\, and devices. A fundamental foundation that creators can use for any gaming project\, an “Aristotle’s Poetics” for the games industry if you will. \n— \nDenis Dyack is the Chief Creative Officer of Quantum Entanglement Entertainment. \nA video game industry veteran of more than 25 years\, he founded Silicon Knights in 1992 creating titles such as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain\, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem\, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes\, and Too Human. SUMMARY:Hamilton Feminist Edit-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia has a gender bias problem. Their own surveys have indicated that only about 8–16 percent of Wikipedia editors are female and a 2009 Wikimedia Foundation survey showed only six percent of super editors (more than 500 edits) were female. This is an issue for many reasons\, including reports of harassment of female editors on Wikipedia forums. \nThe lack of female editors on Wikipedia also creates a bias in the content generated by their editor community. We need more women participating to ensure that women are represented equally in the massive fabric of human history that is Wikipedia. One approach to address this bias is running female edit-a-thons\, which are growing in popularity and have taken place across the globe. \nWe are proud to be hosting a feminist edit-a-thon on April 10 at CoMotion on King to bring together our incredible community of women in this city and bring some much-needed new knowledge to Wikipedia! \nNo experience with editing or wikipedia required\, but you will need to bring a laptop (or let us know if you’ll need access to an extra one – we can facilitate that too!). All feminists welcome – men included! \nThe event is free but please register to indicate that you plan to attend. Organizers will email all registrants with important ahead-of-time preparation (just a few easy steps!) that you need in order to start editing right away at the event.  \nWe are SO GRATEFUL to edit-a-thon sponsors Ladies Learning Code Hamilton and CoMotion on King! \n*Please note that the CoMotion on King facility is currently not accessible by elevator. Our sincere apologies for this – if this is a barrier please let us know and we will do our best to find a solution!

SUMMARY:W Booth School Community Check-In: Innovation Studio
DESCRIPTION:W Booth Community Check-In: Guest speaker Ross Rosier of IBM Canada\n \nFriends\, family\, mentors and local community members are invited to attend an Innovation Studio event held to showcase projects now in development by graduate students enrolled in the W Booth School of Engineering Practice at McMaster University. Attendees will be welcome to ask questions or offer feedback. \nPresentations will range in themes from health promotion and safe drinking water to energy conservation and transportation. The common denominator is the application of human-centred design principles to help address the issues of our day. It’s all part of our students’ efforts to tackle significant challenges and to deliver value that has an impact on our world. \nSpecial guest Project Executive Ross Rosier from IBM Canada will share his inside view on the mission and vision of the just-announced centre for healthcare innovation opening in downtown Hamilton later this year. \nThe centre — a partnership between IBM Canada and Hamilton Health Sciences designed to improve health outcomes and create high quality jobs — will help area hospital clinicians\, researchers\, academics and entrepreneurs accelerate the development and commercialization of new healthcare innovations. \nThis FREE Event includes a light dinner and networking.
