Upcoming introduction to JavaScript workshop

Is computer programming a scary mystery to you? That’s OK!
Have you ever wanted to change that? Now you can!
Attend our JavaScript workshop for curious beginners!

When: Saturday January 12th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Where: Volunteer Hamilton (267 King Street East)
Registration (required: $5 early bird, $10 regular): introtojava.eventbrite.com

JavaScript is the programming language that makes modern websites work, whether it’s Facebook or the last online shopping cart you used. Javascript is beginner friendly, but learning JavaScript will also teach you the core ideas that are part of all computer programming. JavaScript is also nice because you don’t have to install anything in order to learn, you can write it in any text editor and it runs in your web browser!

What will I learn?
You will learn about what JavaScript does and how it works. The majority of the time will be spent writing hands on examples in JavaScript. These hands on examples will teach you the basic ideas that are a part of all programming languages. We wil also hand out follow-up resources should you want to keep learning more JavaScript at home.

What is required?
All you need to bring is a laptop! It doesn’t matter what kind of laptop you have, as long as it has a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome) and a text editor (e.g. Notepad, TextEdit). All Windows and Apple laptops come with web browsers and text editors installed. You won’t have to install anything on your laptop as part of this workshop. Please remember to bring your power cord.

What will I get?

  • You will have actually written code that does something

  • An understanding of how the basics of Javascript works

  • A map that will help you navigate things to learn, and where they fall in place (ajax, canvas, node.js, etc….)

Who is running the workshop?
Alex Pineda (@alexpineda77), Brian Graham (@BrianJGraham) and Kevin Browne (@hamiltonkb) will be running the workshop.

Why is this session being organized?
There’s been some interest in introductory programming workshops in Hamilton, but nobody’s organized one yet. We aren’t going to be making any money off this workship at these prices. The space does cost money however, so we have to charge a little bit. There may be more of these depending on demand and the interest level in different topics.
