SURGE Pitch It To Win It

On Wednesday March 23rd the Mohawk College SURGE (@MohawkSURGE) program held it’s first ever Pitch It To Win It event!

The event saw Mohawk student startups pitching for a 1st prize of $1000, a 2nd prize of $400 and a 3rd prize of $200.

The judges for the evening where:

Julie Lukkarila Ontario Centres of Excellence

Chris Farias – Kitestring

Mindy Tweedle– Tweedle Productions

Helping student and recent alumni startups can be a challenge, because you need to give helpful advice (i.e. constructive criticism), but you don’t want to be too negative or discouraging either. The judges did an awesome job of giving a very high value critique while keeping things light and fun!

The students themselves really blew me away with the quality of the pitches. A lot of the ideas are early stage obviously, but in several cases you could see the students weren’t just trying to win a pitch competition but were trying to solve a problem and build real a business.

The winners were:

1) We FIt Your Wellness
2) Spotted
3) Pocket Threadz

Hopefully we see these startups in The Forge next!
